Accounting solutions for Etsy sellers and crafters
A handmade candle priced at $13 typically costs $8.31 to make, pack, and support — then Etsy takes another ~13% in fees. This guide breaks down the full per-candle cost, the divide-don't-add pricing formula for a true 40% margin, and how to price wholesale without losing money.
The EU ended duty-free entry for parcels under €150 on July 1, 2026, France charges €2 per item type, and an EU-wide handling fee of about €2 per parcel arrives in November — Etsy collects the France fee at checkout but not the €3 duty. Here is what each fee costs on a real order and how to book pass-through fees, prepaid duties, and IOSS VAT correctly.
Filament is often under a third of a 3D print's true cost. A six-layer costing method — filament, electricity, wear parts, failed prints, post-processing labor, and machine depreciation — shows why a $4.20 print really costs $15.32, and how to work backwards from Etsy's ~10–12% fees to a list price with a real margin.
Since July 9, 2026, Etsy requires non-US sellers to ship to US buyers under Delivered Duty Paid (DDP), making the seller responsible for import duties now that the US de minimis exemption is gone. This guide covers what DDP actually costs (the tariff plus 15–17 dollar carrier clearance fees), how to rebuild landed cost per listing, and how to book and reconcile embedded versus actual duties every month.
Canada repealed its 3% Digital Services Tax and the CRA is returning about CAD $647 million — $289 million in cash and $358 million offset against other tax debts. Direct filers get automatic refunds with interest; Amazon and Etsy sellers who paid the DST pass-through surcharge get no CRA claim and must reconcile and reclassify those fees themselves.
On June 22, 2026 Etsy's Regulatory Operating Fee rose to 0.48% in the UK, 1.14% in France, 0.80% in Italy, and 0.88% in Spain, added a new 1.97% fee in Hungary, and fell in India and Türkiye. This guide shows the real per-order cost, the full 2026 fee stack, and a clearing-account routine to reconcile every Etsy payout.
Printful and Printify fulfillment charges typically run 45-55% of retail price and belong in Schedule C Part III as cost of goods sold, not in general expenses. This guide separates the two print-on-demand models, shows why a 50% COGS ratio means a $30 sale yields about $6 of contribution after ads and processing, and lays out a chart of accounts and monthly reconciliation that keep margins and taxes correct.
DAC7 (Council Directive 2021/514) makes marketplaces report seller data to EU tax authorities by January 31 each year. For goods, you stay exempt only if you are under both 30 transactions and €2,000 on that platform for the calendar year — miss either prong and you are reportable, and ignoring the verification request lets the platform withhold payouts after two reminders and 60 days.
The diameter × height × multiplier formula that most bowl turners use to price work ignores cracked blanks, drying time, and overhead — accounting them correctly as a separate spoilage loss (not folded into COGS) reveals whether a shop's pricing actually covers its real costs.
Print-on-demand sellers run two different businesses — integration channels (Etsy + Printify) with real COGS, and marketplace channels (Redbubble, Amazon Merch) with none. This guide covers how to reconcile 1099-K gross figures, avoid double-counting platform fees, handle marketplace-facilitator sales tax, and structure a per-channel chart of accounts to track margins that range from 20% to 70%.
With gold near $4,200/oz in mid-2026, jewelry makers who cost pieces at historical purchase price lose margin on every sale. Recipe-based COGS — a fixed bill of materials, labor, and overhead per design, repriced at current metal replacement cost — plus channel-specific markups (2x direct, 3–4x Etsy, wholesale at 25% of retail) keeps pricing and books accurate.
Since 2024, Part XX of Canada's Income Tax Act requires Uber, Airbnb, Etsy, and other platforms to report sellers with 30+ transactions or over $2,800 CAD directly to the CRA — including names, SINs, gross payouts, and fees. With two reporting cycles now on file and penalty relief expired, here's who gets reported, what data the CRA matches against your return, and how to reconcile before the next January 31 deadline.
