Getting Started
This guide will walk you through the basics of using Beancount.io your financial tracking application on both mobile and desktop platforms.
Web Application
Transaction Entry
The web interface offers a more detailed view for recording transactions:
- Click the "+" button in the editor section to add a new entry
- Select "Transaction" from the tabs at the top
- Enter the transaction date using the calendar picker
- Fill in the payee (e.g., "UberEats") and description (e.g., "Lunch Meal")
- Enter the accounts affected:
- Debit side: "Liabilities:CreditCard" (appears as negative amount, e.g., -12.95 USD)
- Credit side: "Expenses:Misc" (appears as positive amount, e.g., 12.95 USD)
- Click "Save" to record the transaction
Mobile App Basics
Home Screen Overview
When you open the mobile app, you'll see your main dashboard displaying:
- Your net assets (currently $100.00 USD)
- Account balances with categories like Assets and Liabilities
- A monthly net income graph tracking your financial activity
- Quick access buttons for common functions
Adding a Transaction
To record a new expense or income:
- Tap the "Quick Add" button from the home screen
- Enter the transaction amount (e.g., $12.95)
- Select the accounts to debit and credit:
- For expenses: Usually from "Liabilities:CreditCard" to "Expenses:Misc" or other categories
- For income: Usually from "Income" categories to "Assets" accounts
- Use the number pad to confirm the amount, then tap "Next"
- Enter the payee information (e.g., "UberEats")
- Add a description (e.g., "Lunch Meal")
- Tap "Done" to save your transaction
Tips for Effective Tracking
- Categorize transactions consistently using the Categories system
- Use specific descriptions to make reports more meaningful
- Review your Monthly Net Income regularly to track spending patterns
- Set up weekly or monthly reports to stay informed about your financial status
