Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX), the Zeeland, Michigan maker of auto-dimming mirrors and automotive electronics, reported third-quarter 2026 net sales of $647.7 million, down 1.1% year over year and roughly $35 million below its own beginning-of-quarter forecast. Net income fell 10% to $90.6 million ($0.43 diluted), and management cut full-year guidance across the board — revenue to ~$2.65 billion (the old low end), gross margin to 34.0–34.5%.

And yet the quarter contains the strongest evidence yet for the Gentex thesis: North American automotive revenue grew 3% while regional light-vehicle production fell 5% — 800 basis points of outgrowth — and Europe grew 13% excluding the known Volkswagen program loss. Content per vehicle is winning; absolute volumes and two discrete share losses are losing by more. That race is the whole story.

Gross margin compressed on higher precious-metal costs and deleverage from the sales shortfall — management called the drivers "relatively concentrated." Below the line, a $7.8 million other loss (versus $1.8 million) included a $4.7 million technology-investment impairment, and the tax rate ticked down to 15.5% from 16.3%. Adjusted EPS held flat at $0.47 only by adding back $3.0 million of intangible impairments, $0.8 million of severance and the $4.7 million investment impairment.

Automotive unit shipments tracked expectations — the $35 million miss came from "certain customer issues and delayed launches." Stripped of China and VW, global automotive revenue grew ~2% against a 2%+ decline in world production, driven by advanced feature content (auto-dimming, displays) and the European rollout of driver-monitoring (DMS) and camera-monitoring (ICMS) products. CEO Steve Downing: the results "demonstrate the resilience of our business and the continued benefits of our strategy to grow through technology, product mix, and diversification."

The diversification leg is real now: non-automotive revenue grew ~17% to 15% of the total (from 12%), led by Premium Audio's 27% jump and triple-digit Aerospace growth (+135%) plus Fire Protection (+36%) inside Other Products. China, meanwhile, collapsed 44% to $22.1 million — previously flagged industry conditions, but the slope is steepening, not stabilizing.

The Cut Guide

Revenue~$2.65B$2.65–2.75B
Gross margin34.0–34.5%34.5–35.5%
Operating expenses$395–410M$405–415M
Tax rate16–16.5%16–17%
Capex$100–115M$115–125M

Every line moved the wrong way except costs, which management is cutting to compensate (opex and capex both lowered). The revenue guide implies ~4.6% growth over FY2025's $2,534.3 million — but nine-month sales of $1,974.5 million mean Q4 must print ~$676 million, 4% above Q3, against Mobility Global's forecast of −4% global Q4 production. The guide bakes in more outgrowth, not a volume recovery.

The Multi-Year Arc: Sales Compound, Profits Don't

Fiscal yearNet salesNet income
FY2021$1,731.2M$360.8M
FY2022$1,919.0M$318.8M
FY2023$2,299.2M$428.4M
FY2024$2,313.3M$404.5M
FY2025$2,534.3M$384.7M
9M 2026$1,974.5M$303.2M

Sales have grown every year (+46% cumulative since FY2021) while net income peaked in FY2023 and has fallen two straight years. The wedge is investment and mix: E,R&D rose from $117.8 million to $203.3 million (+73%), SG&A nearly doubled with the Premium Audio build-out, and impairments/severance have become annual entries. Gentex is spending the auto-mirror annuity on diversification — the strategy is visible in the P&L before it is visible in profits.

The balance sheet remains a fortress with a shareholder-return habit. Total assets of $2,940.5 million are essentially flat year to date; equity slipped 0.2% to $2,483.9 million as $270.2 million of year-to-date buybacks (11.6 million shares at $23.28) plus $0.36 of dividends outran $303.2 million of nine-month earnings. Cash sits at $136.4 million against no meaningful debt. The redeemable non-controlling interest went to nil in the quarter (from $3.1 million at year-end), removing the last minority claim on book value.

A filing note: no 10-Q has been filed for the quarter, so these figures come from the earnings release's unaudited condensed statements, which collapse liabilities and equity into summary lines and carry no cash flow statement. The ledger anchors equity to the Q2 10-Q and plugs retained earnings to the filed total — flagged for true-up against the 10-Q.

The One Big Question: Does Content Outgrowth Beat a Shrinking, Share-Losing Market?

The bull case is the outgrowth math. Eight hundred basis points in North America and 13% in Europe ex-VW, two quarters running, from DMS/ICMS rollout and feature content — Gentex gets paid more per car even as fewer cars get built. Non-auto at 15% and +17% diversifies the cycle; Premium Audio's 27% and Aerospace's 135% are genuine second engines. At $23 and change the buyback retires ~5% of shares a year, and the $0.48 dividend yields ~2% while you wait.

The bear case is that management keeps missing its own forecasts in the same direction: −$35 million this quarter, then a guide cut that still requires Q4 heroics against −4% production. China −44% and the VW program loss are not "discrete items" if they recur — they are share losses in the world's largest auto market and with a top-three global OEM. Gross margin has compressed four straight quarters on metals and mix, and net income is down two straight years while sales grow. Outgrowth is real but insufficient: auto revenue still fell 3.7% in absolute terms.

The tell is Q4 revenue against the ~$676 million the guide requires, and whether China stabilizes or falls further. A Q4 beat on DMS/ICMS content confirms the content thesis compounds through the cycle; a second miss says the cycle and share losses are bigger than the outgrowth. Watch those before anything else.

Tracking a $2.9 Billion Balance Sheet in Plain Text

A summary-only balance sheet is where double-entry earns its keep: one $404.4 million current-liabilities line and one $2,483.9 million equity line still have to reconcile to $2,940.5 million of detailed assets, and the ledger shows exactly where each plugged dollar sits. This is how we model every company. The Q3 income statement, exactly as filed (income negative, expenses positive, net income absorbed by Equity:Adjustments):

The one balance-sheet number that tells the narrative: receivables up 9.8% and inventories up 6.6% year to date against nine-month sales up 4.4% — working capital growing faster than revenue into a guided Q4 production decline.

The Verdict: Bull vs. Bear

Bull Case

  • 800 bps of North American outgrowth (+3% revenue vs. −5% production) — content per vehicle is compounding.
  • Europe +13% ex-VW on DMS/ICMS rollout — the next content cycle is already shipping.
  • Non-auto 15% of revenue and +17% — Premium Audio +27%, Aerospace +135% diversify the cycle for real.
  • Fortress balance sheet funding 5%-a-year buybacks plus a $0.48 dividend — paid to wait.
  • Adjusted opex down 4.2% — cost discipline is offsetting the margin squeeze.

Bear Case

  • −$35 million forecast miss followed by a guide cut that still needs Q4 heroics against −4% production.
  • China −44% and the VW program loss — share losses, not cycle noise, in key markets.
  • Net income down two straight years while sales grow — the diversification spend shows up before the returns.
  • Gross margin fell to 33.4% (from 37.0% in Q2) on metals and deleverage, with headwinds guided into Q4.
  • Working capital (AR +9.8%, inventories +6.6%) outrunning sales (+4.4% nine-month) into a production decline.

Our Take: Believe the outgrowth, discount the guide. Gentex's content story is demonstrably working — 800 bps doesn't happen by accident — but management's forecasting has an optimistic bias the market will keep punishing until Q4 proves otherwise. The quarter to watch is the one they just guided: ~$676 million against falling production, with China as the swing factor. Watch those before anything else.
