From the Berkshire Hathaway Open LedgerView the live ledger
Berkshire Hathaway reported $25.7 billion of net earnings attributable to shareholders in the second quarter of 2026 — more than double the year-ago quarter — but $10.9 billion of that print is unrealized gains on equity securities that GAAP forces through the income statement. Operating earnings were $13.0 billion. On the balance sheet, cash and U.S. Treasury Bills totaled about $365.5 billion, and insurance float was about $177.5 billion. The public Beancount ledger below keeps investment gains on Income:OtherNet so operating revenues stay readable, and it models the Q2 file as first-half YTD through June 30 to match the 10-Q duration columns.
The Headline Numbers
Berkshire's fiscal year ends December 31. The August 8, 2026 news release prints both second-quarter and first-six-months results after tax. The Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2026 (accn 0001193125-26-341032) is the balance-sheet and YTD income source for the ledger. Headline release figures (Q2 and H1). The Beancount fence models H1 YTD through June 30, so the gate table is the H1 GAAP stack:
| Metric | H1 2026 | H1 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $195,483M | $182,240M |
| Net income | $35,773M | $16,973M |
| Investment gains (losses), after tax | $11,444M | $(68)M |
| Operating earnings (non-GAAP) | $24,329M | $20,801M |
Q2 print from the same release (narrative; the fence is H1):
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Net earnings attributable to Berkshire | $25,667M | $12,370M |
| Investment gains (losses), after tax | $12,684M | $4,970M |
| of which unrealized equity gains | $10,900M | $1,500M |
| Operating earnings (non-GAAP) | $12,983M | $11,160M |
| Class A EPS (avg equivalent) | $17,868 | $8,601 |
| Class B EPS (avg equivalent) | $11.91 | $5.73 |
The release is explicit about what sits inside investment gains:
"Investment gains (losses) in 2026 include gains of $10.9 billion in the second quarter and $3.9 billion in the first six months … due to changes … in the unrealized gains that existed in our equity security investment holdings." — Berkshire Hathaway Inc. News Release, August 8, 2026
And about how to read the GAAP EPS line:
"The amount of investment gains (losses) in any given quarter is usually meaningless and delivers figures for net earnings per share that can be extremely misleading to investors who have little or no knowledge of accounting rules." — same release
That is the One Big Question for this period: operating earnings versus mark-to-market. The ledger answers it structurally — Income:Revenue is operating revenues only; pre-tax investment gains of $14,472 million (H1 10-Q line) post to Income:OtherNet.
Revenue Deep Dive
H1 2026 consolidated revenues from the 10-Q were $195,483 million (Q2 alone $101,808 million). Segment mix for the first six months:
| Segment / line | H1 2026 | H1 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance premiums earned | $44,480M | $43,999M |
| Sales and service revenues | $108,228M | $97,473M |
| Leasing revenues | $5,558M | $4,940M |
| Interest, dividend and other investment income | $11,287M | $11,634M |
| Railroad transportation revenues | $12,493M | $11,389M |
| Utilities and energy operating revenues | $11,215M | $10,612M |
| RUE service revenues and other income | $2,222M | $2,193M |
| Total revenues | $195,483M | $182,240M |
Sales and service (manufacturing, service, retailing) grew about $10.8 billion year over year in the half. Railroad and utility/energy each added roughly $0.6–1.1 billion. Insurance premiums were roughly flat. Investment income (interest and dividends inside revenues) slipped slightly; the noisy line is investment gains, which are below revenue.
Operating earnings by business (release)
| Business | Q2 2026 | H1 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance-underwriting | $1,731M | $3,448M |
| Insurance-investment income | $3,059M | $5,738M |
| BNSF | $1,558M | $2,935M |
| Berkshire Hathaway Energy | $891M | $2,005M |
| Manufacturing, service and retailing | $4,470M | $7,669M |
| Other | $1,274M | $2,534M |
| Operating earnings | $12,983M | $24,329M |
Manufacturing, service and retailing is the largest operating block in both the quarter and the half. Insurance underwriting contributed $1.7 billion in Q2; float still compounds investment income even when underwriting is only a mid-single-digit share of operating earnings.
Management signal scan
Primary sources: August 8, 2026 news release and the June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q. Scan of the seven bullish themes:
| Theme | Hit? | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Demand exceeding supply | No | No demand-outpaces-supply language. |
| Strong industry upcycle | No | No industry-upcycle claim. |
| Market expansion ahead of plan | No | No "ahead of plan" expansion wording. |
| New product launches outperforming | No | Not a product-ramp release. |
| Sustained selling-price increases | No | No ASP / pricing-momentum language. |
| Tight supply | No | No supply-constraint language. |
| Robust demand | No | No "demand remains robust" / bookings language. |
Absence is the finding. Berkshire's release is a reconciliation of operating earnings and a warning about GAAP investment gains — not a capacity or pricing narrative. The language that is load-bearing is the accounting one quoted above, plus capital allocation:
"Berkshire acquired approximately $4.5 billion in treasury shares during the second quarter of 2026, bringing the six-month total to about $4.8 billion." — August 8, 2026 release
"At June 30, 2026, insurance float … was approximately $177.5 billion, an increase of approximately $1.1 billion since yearend 2025." — same release
Those are the signals the filing actually publishes. The ledger's Liabilities:NonCurrent:InsuranceReserves and cash/T-bill lines are where they show up as balances.
The Margin Story
GAAP net margin on H1 revenues is high and noisy: attributable NI $35,773M / revenues $195,483M ≈ 18.3%. Operating earnings / revenues is $24,329M / $195,483M ≈ 12.4%. The gap is almost entirely investment gains.
Multi-year GAAP attributable net income (10-K / companyfacts):
| Period | Revenues | Net income (attributable) | Net margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2021 | $276,185M | $89,937M | 32.6% |
| FY2022 | $302,020M | $(22,759)M | −7.5% |
| FY2023 | $364,482M | $96,223M | 26.4% |
| FY2024 | $371,433M | $88,995M | 24.0% |
| FY2025 | $371,444M | $66,968M | 18.0% |
| FY2026 H1 | $195,483M | $35,773M | 18.3% |
FY2022 is the teaching year: revenues rose, and EquitySecuritiesFvNiGainLoss of about $(67) billion turned the GAAP bottom line negative while operating businesses stayed profitable. That is why the chart puts investment gains on Income:OtherNet every year — so a reader can subtract them without reverse-engineering the income statement.
There is no sustained selling-price language in this release to hang a margin thesis on. The margin story is accounting identity: GAAP NI = operating earnings + after-tax investment gains (plus the rare impairment line). In Q2 2026 that identity is $12,983M + $12,684M = $25,667M.
The One Big Question: Operating Earnings or Mark-to-Market?
Separate three numbers the release prints in one table:
| Layer | Q2 2026 | H1 2026 | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating earnings | $12,983M | $24,329M | Non-GAAP; excludes investment gains/losses |
| Investment gains (after tax) | $12,684M | $11,444M | Mostly equity MTM; Q2 includes $10.9B unrealized |
| Net earnings attributable | $25,667M | $35,773M | GAAP |
Q2 investment gains exceed Q2 operating earnings. H1 investment gains are smaller than H1 operating earnings because the first quarter's unrealized path differed — H1 unrealized gains in the release are $3.9 billion, not $10.9 billion. Anyone who annualizes Q2 GAAP EPS without stripping MTM is reading the equity portfolio's quarterly path, not Berkshire's underwriting and operating cadence.
The 10-Q's pre-tax investment gains line for H1 is $14,472 million. That is the amount the ledger posts to Income:OtherNet. After tax and the operating stack, attributable NI is $35,773 million — the Equity:Adjustments offset on the H1 income transaction.
Tracking a $1.26T Company in Plain Text
Double-entry forces every dollar onto a named account. For an insurer-conglomerate that means the equity portfolio, the Treasury bill pile, and the insurance float cannot hide inside a generic "other assets" residual if you want the story to be auditable. We follow how we model every company: pad/balance the balance sheet from Equity:Adjustments, one zero-sum income transaction per period, investment gains off the revenue line.

Income:Revenue -195483 MUSD
Income:OtherNet -14472 MUSD ; investment gains (10-Q)
Expenses:OtherNet 165751 MUSD
Expenses:IncomeTax 8431 MUSD
Equity:Adjustments 35773 MUSD ; attributable NIBalance-sheet lines that carry this quarter's narrative (June 30, 2026):
| Account | MUSD | Filing meaning |
|---|---|---|
Assets:Current:Cash | 40,609 | Insurance & Other + RUE cash |
Assets:Current:ShortTermInvestments | 324,905 | U.S. Treasury Bills |
Assets:NonCurrent:Investments | 323,779 | Equity securities at FV |
Assets:NonCurrent:FixedMaturities | 17,034 | AFS debt securities |
Liabilities:NonCurrent:InsuranceReserves | 185,607 | Unpaid losses (incl. retroactive) + unearned premiums |
| Total assets | 1,263,071 | Ties to 10-Q |
Cash plus T-bills = $365,514 million — the ~$365.5B cash pile. Equity securities at fair value are a separate $323.8 billion stack; that is where the $10.9B unrealized Q2 move lives economically, even though GAAP runs the change through earnings.
The Multi-Year Arc
| Period | Revenues | Attributable NI | Equity securities (FV) | Total assets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2021 | $276.2B | $89.9B | $350.7B | $959.4B |
| FY2022 | $302.0B | $(22.8)B | $308.8B | $948.5B |
| FY2023 | $364.5B | $96.2B | $353.8B | $1,070.0B |
| FY2024 | $371.4B | $89.0B | $271.6B | $1,153.9B |
| FY2025 | $371.4B | $67.0B | $297.8B | $1,222.2B |
| FY2026Q2 (H1) | $195.5B | $35.8B | $323.8B | $1,263.1B |
Revenues plateaued near $371 billion in FY2024–FY2025 while the equity portfolio was cut and then partially rebuilt — FV holdings fell from $354B at YE2023 to $272B at YE2024, then $298B at YE2025 and $324B at mid-2026. Assets crossed $1.26 trillion. The compounding machine is still the float-plus-operating-businesses stack; the GAAP earnings path is the equity portfolio's path with operating earnings underneath.
The Verdict: Bull vs. Bear
Bull Case
- Operating earnings grew to $13.0B in Q2 and $24.3B in H1 — the release's preferred performance measure is rising.
- Manufacturing, service and retailing operating earnings of $4.5B in Q2 show the non-insurance engine contributing.
- Insurance float ≈ $177.5B, up ~$1.1B since year-end — still a structural funding advantage.
- ~$365.5B of cash and T-bills plus a $324B equity portfolio leave enormous capital-allocation optionality (including the $4.5B of Q2 buybacks).
- The public ledger separates MTM from operations the way the annual letter asks readers to.
Bear Case
- Q2 GAAP NI is majority mark-to-market: $12.7B of after-tax investment gains vs $13.0B of operating earnings.
- FY2025 GAAP NI ($67.0B) was already well below FY2023's $96.2B on flat revenues — earnings quality depends on which equity tape you drew.
- Equity securities remain $324B; another FY2022-style drawdown would dominate the GAAP print again.
- The release carries none of the classic demand/pricing/upcycle signals — this is not a growth-narrative quarter.
- Railroad/utility net leverage (RUE notes $85.3B) is real even if insurance float dwarfs it.
Our Take: Treat $13.0 billion of Q2 operating earnings as the run-rate signal and $25.7 billion of GAAP NI as the portfolio's quarterly report card. The Beancount model encodes that split: revenues on Income:Revenue, investment gains on Income:OtherNet, float on InsuranceReserves, T-bills on ShortTermInvestments. Read the operating line; audit the MTM line; do not confuse them.
