You quoted $55 an hour, landed a $4,200 illuminated channel letter job, and celebrated — until you paid for aluminum, LEDs, power supplies, two installers, a lift rental, and the city permit. What is left feels closer to $200 than the $1,200 profit you expected. If your shop stays busy but your bank account does not, your pricing model is probably collapsing three very different cost buckets into one flat hourly rate.
That flat rate feels simple. Your hourly shop rate should be built from a fully burdened labor rate, not the number on the paycheck.
Burdened rate = base wage × (1 + payroll tax rate + workers' comp + benefits + PTO factor) + overhead per labor hour

- FICA taxes: 7.65 percent
- Workers' comp for shop and field install: often 4 to 12 percent depending on state and class code; field install is higher than shop fabrication
- Health insurance, retirement match, training, uniforms, and PTO: 10 to 25 percent combined
- Overhead recovery: total annual indirect costs divided by total billable labor hours
