B2B Buy Now, Pay Later for Suppliers: How Inflation Is Pushing Small Businesses Toward Deferred-Payment Financing on Purchase Orders

Fifty-eight percent of small businesses say inflation has pushed them to delay a purchase, stretch a payment, or ask a supplier for terms — and suppliers are answering with a tool that looks a lot like consumer BNPL.

B2B buy now, pay later (BNPL) for suppliers lets a buyer receive goods on a purchase order today and pay the BNPL provider in installments over 30–90 days, while the supplier is paid upfront minus a fee. It is purchase-order financing repackaged as a payment method at checkout or on the invoice.

How B2B BNPL Works on a PO

  • At order: Buyer selects BNPL at the supplier's B2B portal or the invoice offers BNPL via a fintech.
  • At fulfillment: The supplier ships and is paid by the BNPL provider, typically 95–98% of invoice face minus the fee.
  • At repayment: The buyer repays the provider in installments — often 3× monthly — with an explicit fee or an implied discount forfeited.

For the buyer, B2B BNPL is a short-term liability with a fee, not trade payables on net-30. For the supplier, it is accelerated cash at a discount that must be booked as a financing cost, not as a sales discount, unless the discount is truly for prompt payment.

Cost vs. Terms

Supplier net-30 is often 0% if paid on time, with a 1–2% discount for early pay that annualizes to 18–36% if taken. B2B BNPL fees are quoted as a flat percentage of invoice — 2–4% for 60 days — which annualizes to 12–24%.

Which is cheaper depends on whether you take the early-pay discount and whether you need the deferral. BNPL is cheaper than a credit card advance and more expensive than cash.

Bookkeeping

  • Buyer: Dr Inventory $10,000 / Cr BNPL Payable $10,000 at receipt; fee accrues as Dr Financing Cost $300 / Cr BNPL Payable $300 if not upfront, then each payment Dr BNPL Payable / Cr Cash.
  • Supplier: Dr Cash $9,700 / Dr BNPL Fee Expense $300 / Cr Revenue $10,000. Not Cr Sales Discount.

Keep Your Finances Organized From Day One

B2B BNPL turns a supplier invoice into a financing decision. Book the fee as financing, not as a cost of goods adjustment, and the margin stays honest.
