Trial balance worksheet

List each account's ending balance in the debit or credit column and see at once whether the two totals agree — with exact totals and the difference. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Worksheet details stay in this tab. Nothing you type is saved, added to the URL or sent to analytics.

Worksheet details

Three-letter code such as USD or EUR. One currency per worksheet.

Account balances

Enter each account's ending balance in one column only. Type plain numbers such as 1250.00 — no thousands separators or currency symbols.

Print, download or import

Print the worksheet or download it as CSV once every row is valid. An out-of-balance worksheet keeps its difference in both.

Printing and downloading unlock once the worksheet has at least one account and no errors.

Importing replaces the whole worksheet, and only if every line of the file is valid.

CSV template

The first line must be exactly:

trial_balance_v1,as_of,currency,account,debit,credit

Then one account line per account, repeating the same as-of date and currency. Put a plain number such as 1250.00 in debit or credit and leave the other empty; 0 is allowed.

account,2026-03-31,USD,Cash,15000.00,
account,2026-03-31,USD,Accounts Payable,,6700.00

Exports end with total and difference lines. They are for reading only: an import recalculates the totals and never treats them as accounts.

Labels starting with =, +, - or @ are saved with a leading apostrophe so spreadsheets show them as text. Import removes that apostrophe again.

Totals check

Add at least one account balance to see the totals.

What equal totals do not prove

Matching columns only show that the balances you entered add up the same on both sides. A transaction left out entirely, an entry posted to the wrong account, a wrong amount recorded on both sides, or two errors that cancel out all still balance — review the underlying ledger before relying on your statements.

Trial balance questions

What is a trial balance?

A list of every general-ledger account with its ending balance in a debit or credit column at one date. In double-entry bookkeeping the two column totals should be equal, so the worksheet is a quick consistency check before you prepare financial statements.

What if my totals don't match?

Look at the difference first. A difference divisible by 9 often points to transposed digits, and a difference equal to one balance suggests an account was left out or entered in the wrong column. Then re-check each balance against the ledger. This worksheet never adds a balancing plug for you.

Does a balanced trial balance mean my books are correct?

No. It proves only that debits and credits agree. Omitted transactions, entries posted to the wrong account, and equal errors on both sides still balance, so reconciliations and a review of the ledger are still needed.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The worksheet runs entirely in your browser tab. Nothing is saved, put in the URL or sent to analytics, so closing the tab clears it.

Keep a ledger that always balances

In Beancount every transaction must balance before it is accepted, so debits always equal credits by construction — and every account is plain text you own.
