Monthly comparisons

Year-over-year growth calculator

Compare one monetary metric, month by month, with the same calendar month in the previous year.

Your entries stay in this browser tab. They are not uploaded or saved when you leave.

Import monthly observations

Choose a local CSV, review its scope, then apply it to replace the worksheet. Nothing is uploaded.

UTF-8 CSV, up to 1 MiB and 240 observation rows. Use the input template, not the results export.

CSV format and missing months

Input header (keep these names and their order):

year_over_year_growth_v1,metric,currency,comparison_year,month,value

Each row starts with observation and repeats the same metric, currency and comparison year. Use YYYY-MM calendar months. Omit a row when its value is missing; an explicit blank value is rejected. Enter 0 for a known zero.

Use digits 0–9, an optional minus sign (-) and a decimal point (.), without grouping, a leading plus sign or exponents. Quote text containing commas or quotes; double quotes inside quoted text. The template adds one reversible apostrophe before formula-looking metric text.

Monthly worksheet

Enter calendar-month totals from your records for one metric and one currency. Values are nominal: no inflation, currency conversion or seasonal adjustment is applied.

Use a consistent definition for both years, such as revenue or net profit. Up to 120 characters.

Use the three-letter code for all amounts, such as USD. No currency conversion is performed.

Choose a calendar year from 1901 to 2100. Each month is paired with the same month one year earlier.

Monthly values

Blank means missing, not zero. Enter 0 for a known zero. Use digits 0–9 and a decimal point (.), without grouping separators; negative values are allowed. Each amount must be greater than −1 billion and less than 1 billion.

Enter a valid comparison year to edit its months and the preceding year.

Monthly comparisons

Enter a metric, currency, comparison year and at least one monthly value to see comparisons.

Enter at least one valid monthly value and resolve all errors before downloading results.

Understand your comparisons

Which values should I enter?

Use complete calendar-month totals for the same monetary metric and currency, with a consistent accounting definition. This worksheet compares matching months only; it does not calculate annual totals or infer fiscal periods.

Why is a percentage sometimes not shown?

Missing values cannot be compared. An entered zero is different: amount change is available, but a zero prior value cannot be a divisor. For a negative prior value, this worksheet withholds the percentage as an interpretation policy. A negative current value with a positive prior value remains comparable.

Does a higher percentage always mean improvement?

No. It depends on the metric: higher expenses may be undesirable, and profit can move from a gain to a loss. Compare the signed amounts and your underlying records. Results are nominal and do not adjust for inflation, exchange rates or business changes.

Keep the records behind each month
