Argentina's 2026 Monotributo Redesign: Higher Category Ceilings, Simplified Parameters, and What Freelancers Invoicing in Dollars Need to Know

Argentina's simplified regime for small taxpayers — monotributo — is also the regime that most freelancers who invoice foreign clients use, and in 2026 the category ceilings rose and the parameters shrank.

What Changed

Higher ceilings: The top category for services (Category H for services, K for commerce) moved from roughly $16 million to $22+ million ARS annually, with the lower categories also lifted. The lift reflects inflation and the fact that many freelancers who billed in dollars crossed into general regime solely because of exchange-rate-driven nominal revenue.

Fewer parameters: The regime historically used five parameters — gross revenue, electricity consumption, rent, surface area, and employee count — to cap each category. The 2026 redesign keeps gross revenue as the primary parameter for services and de-emphasizes electricity and surface for knowledge workers, which makes sense when the freelancer works from a laptop.

Dollar invoicing: Freelancers who receive dollars via Payoneer, Wise, or a foreign bank and convert via MULC must track revenue at the AFIP official rate on the invoice or collection date, depending on the regime. The monotributo ceiling is in ARS, not dollars, so a weaker peso can push you over the ceiling on exchange alone, even with flat dollar income.

Bookkeeping That Prevents Recategorization

  • Monthly gross tracker: Gross invoiced, by month, vs. the category ceiling annualized. Set an alert at 75% and 90% of the next category.
  • Semestral recategorization: Monotributo recategorizes in January and July based on trailing 12-month gross. Keep a trailing 12-month total that updates monthly, not just in recategorization months.
  • Dollar conversion log: Date, dollar amount, official rate, ARS amount, and the invoice number. That log is the evidence when AFIP questions whether a June invoice should have counted toward June or July.

Keep Your Finances Organized From Day One

Monotributo is a gross-revenue regime that punishes messy invoicing more than it punishes low margins. Track gross in ARS at the official rate, month by month, and the category that fits is the category you keep.

Beancount.io keeps each dollar invoice as a transaction with ARS conversion at the official rate, version-controlled and recategorizable before AFIP does it for you. Get started for free and make the redesign a higher ceiling, not a late reclassification.
