What's Inside

Ulta Beauty's fiscal year is the 52 or 53 weeks ending on the Saturday closest
to January 31 and is named for the calendar year in which it starts: fiscal
2025 ended January 31, 2026, and FY2023 (ended February 3, 2024) has 53 weeks.
All figures come from Ulta Beauty, Inc.'s Form 10-K and Form 10-Q filings on
SEC EDGAR (CIK 0001403568; Nasdaq: ULTA). Each year is recorded as last
presented, which for every period here equals the figure originally filed.
FY2026Q2 is the standalone 13 weeks May 3 – August 1, 2026, not the 26-week
statement; FY2026Q1 is not included. The filings print thousands of dollars
and the ledger keeps that precision.

Quick Start

bash
uvx --from beancount bean-check main.bean
uvx --from beanquery bean-query main.bean \
"SELECT year, sum(position) WHERE account ~ '^Income:Revenue' GROUP BY year ORDER BY year"

Zero output from bean-check means the ledger is internally consistent: every
income statement sums to zero and every balance-sheet snapshot reconciles to
the filed totals. The query prints revenue by calendar year; income is a
credit, so it shows as a negative number. Open main.bean in Fava
or import it into beancount.io to explore it visually.

Methodology

  • Balance sheet — pad / balance directives assert each period-end
figure against the filing named in that period file's source banner.
  • Income statement — one zero-sum transaction per period: Income
negative (credit), Expenses positive (debit), with the arithmetic check in
    a comment directly above it.
  • Unit — MUSD; 3,035.676 MUSD means 3,035.676 million US dollars.
  • Space NK — the company acquired Space NK Limited on July 10, 2025
(fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, Note 3). The ledger reflects it only where the
filings do: goodwill and other intangible assets step up at January 31,
2026 ($213.798 million of goodwill and a $201.635 million trade name), and
short-term debt includes Space NK's revolving facility. The filings print
no Space NK revenue or profit figure, no pro forma results and no amount
for the transaction costs they place in SG&A, so the ledger carries no
acquired-versus-organic split and no acquisition-cost posting.
  • Operating lines — cost of sales and selling, general and
administrative expenses are the filed lines. The filing's separate
pre-opening expenses line is a second, labeled posting on
Expenses:SellingGeneralAdministrative, so the filing's operating income
    is a ledger subtotal.
  • Below operating income — interest expense (income), net and, from
fiscal 2025, equity net loss of affiliate are each their own labeled
posting with the filed value, on Expenses:OtherNet when they net to an
    expense (FY2021, FY2025, FY2026Q2) and on Income:OtherNet when interest
    is net income (FY2022–FY2024).
  • Revenue — Income:Revenue is one posting equal to the filing's net
sales; the approximate category mix the filings print is in each period
    file's comments.
  • No named one-offs — no period here has an impairment, restructuring or
tariff-refund line. The Form 10-Q for the quarter ended August 1, 2026 and
that quarter's earnings release do not mention a tariff refund.
  • Balance-sheet residuals — Assets:Current:Other is prepaid expenses
and other current assets plus prepaid income taxes; Assets:NonCurrent:Other
    is deferred compensation plan assets plus other long-term assets;
Liabilities:Current:Other is accrued liabilities plus accrued income
taxes; Liabilities:NonCurrent:Other is deferred income taxes plus other
long-term liabilities. Each line's comment reconciles to the filed total.
  • Additional accounts — Assets:Current:Inventory,
    Assets:NonCurrent:OperatingLeaseRightOfUse,
    Liabilities:Current:OperatingLeases,
    Liabilities:NonCurrent:OperatingLeases, Equity:TreasuryStock, opened
beyond the standard chart (see each account's open line in main.bean).
  • Balance tolerance — main.bean tightens Beancount's inferred balance
tolerance so that a one-thousand-dollar move between two period ends is
    asserted rather than absorbed.
