What's Inside

Fiscal years end December 31. All figures sourced from Synchrony Financial Form 10-K and 10-Q filings (SEC CIK 0001601712). The filing's balance sheet is unclassified, so Current / NonCurrent here are the house hierarchy; loan receivables are carried gross with the allowance as a contra account, deposits and securitization borrowings sit in their own accounts, and preferred stock is folded into common stock and paid-in capital net of treasury stock. History starts at FY2024, the earliest year this bootstrap models, and FY2024 other income holds the $1.1 billion pre-tax Pets Best sale gain.

Quick Start

bash
uvx --from beancount bean-check main.bean
uvx --from beanquery bean-query main.bean \
"SELECT year, sum(position) WHERE account ~ '^Income:Revenue' GROUP BY year ORDER BY year"

Zero output from bean-check means the ledger is internally consistent: every
income statement sums to zero and every balance-sheet snapshot reconciles to
the filed totals. The query prints revenue by calendar year; income is a
credit, so it shows as a negative number. Open main.bean in Fava
or import it into beancount.io to explore it visually.

Methodology

  • Balance sheet — pad / balance directives assert each period-end
figure against the filing named in that period file's source banner.
  • Income statement — one zero-sum transaction per period: Income
negative (credit), Expenses positive (debit), with the arithmetic check in
    a comment directly above it.
  • Unit — MUSD; 4,914 MUSD means 4,914 million US dollars.
  • Additional accounts — Assets:NonCurrent:Loans,
    Assets:NonCurrent:LoanAllowance, Liabilities:Current:Deposits,
    Liabilities:NonCurrent:FundingDebt, Expenses:OperatingExpenses, opened
beyond the standard chart (see each account's open line in main.bean).
  • Revenue is total net revenue: net interest income plus total other
income, with interest expense netted and the full walk in each period
comment. Retailer share arrangements and the provision for credit losses
    share Expenses:CostOfRevenue as labeled postings.
  • FY2026 recast — the 10-Q moved internal-use capitalized software from
intangible assets to other assets and recast the December 2025
comparatives; the FY2025 file keeps the 10-K's own presentation and the
FY2026Q3 file uses the new one. Totals are unaffected.
