i’ve been logging every dollar in beancount for like 3 years now. used to be dead simple 100% equities, buy and hold, never looked.
then i set up fava with daily prices and now i catch every little dip. last quarter i trimmed a winner way too early just to lock green, then totally froze on rebalancing into a red month.
apparently there’s a name for it, myopic loss aversion, benartzi and thaler showed people who check more take less risk.
has tracking changed how you actually invest, for better or worse?
man I had the opposite happen, tracking actually calmed me down
before beancount I had no real records, just a brokerage login and a lot of anxiety. market dipped hard and I caved and sold because I had no plan and no clue what my actual basis even was. felt awful after, classic buy high sell low moment
after I had everything in beancount with history and cost basis right there, it got easier to sit still. lived through that brutal drawdown where my portfolio was off by 19% and I did not sell a share, just kept buying like normal. seeing the full picture made the dip feel normal instead of scary
you are already ahead by noticing the pattern
keep going you are doing better than you think
tracking actually calmed me down
Not in my practice. My most detailed trackers trade the most and lag the market 1-2% a year, exactly what Barber and Odean found. You’re the exception, Mike, not the rule.
Supporting Barber and Odean’s finding: https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/overconfidence-defrauds-investors-study-finds men trade 45% more than women and earn lower returns.
still on spreadsheets and kinda scared, will turning on daily prices in fava just stress me out like alert fatigue from monitoring everything?
yeah, I ran daily prices for about a month and hated it. Now I update prices monthly and glance at the dashboard Sundays. Your alert fatigue comparison is spot on.
