The Mentorship Gap: 30 Minutes With a Senior Changed Everything—Should Beancount Formalize This?

Learned Beancount in isolation. Documentation helped, but the real breakthroughs came from reading forum posts (seeing how people structured complex scenarios), random GitHub scripts I found, and one person who spent 30 minutes answering my questions on IRC.

That 30-minute conversation probably saved me weeks of debugging. They explained WHY certain patterns work, not just HOW. That’s the gap: docs explain syntax, but mentors explain philosophy.

Now that I’m experienced, I mentor junior bookkeepers, but it’s ad-hoc (Slack when they ask). No structure. Wondering if the Beancount community could formalize this—a mentorship circle, or pairing experienced + newcomers. Or is informal working fine?

30 minutes changed everything for you. That’s the power of 1-on-1. Forum posts are helpful but they’re written for a general audience. A mentor knows exactly where YOU are struggling.

I learned by reading source code (bad idea, paid dearly) and trial-and-error (better). Neither was mentorship. Would’ve appreciated someone saying “here’s the pattern you should follow.”

Mentorship would be great but who has time? I’m willing to answer questions on forum but structured pairing sounds like a time commitment I can’t make.

We could start with a “office hours” concept—senior members available 1hr/week for Q&A. Lower commitment than full mentorship, still more direct than forum.
