Side Hustle Hit K Last Year—Suddenly Worried About Audit. Is This a Business or Still a Hobby?

Started freelance work on the side in 2024 (weekends, gigs). Made about $8K that year. Fast forward 2026: hit $54K in freelance revenue without really planning it. Now I’m panicked.

Filed Schedule C, paid self-employment tax, but I’m wondering if IRS thinks I’m running an actual business and I’m doing it wrong. No LLC, no separate bank account, mixed everything into personal checking.

At what point does this stop being a “side gig” and become a legit business? Is $50K the threshold? Do I need to formalize now or am I already in trouble?

IRS scrutinizes profit motive, not revenue threshold.

At what point did you decide this was real income and not just pocket money?

Real question: was your intent business from the start? If you were serious (tracking, pursuing clients), probably already a business at $10K. If casual growth, different story. Problem is IRS might have opinions about what you should have known.
