Every day I see issues filed and forum questions unanswered. Half are simple (better error messages, documentation). Half are ambitious (new importers, UI overhaul).
I have ideas I’d contribute if I had time. I bet you do too.
What’s on YOUR Beancount wishlist? If you had 40 free hours, what would you build? And be honest: what’s stopping you from doing it anyway (time, skill, confidence)?
Video tutorials. Hands-on walkthrough of “first-time Beancount setup” would unlock so many people stuck on configuration.
I’d build a bank importer marketplace—centralized, reviewed, easy to share. Right now everyone’s reinventing the wheel (Schwab importer exists in 50 repos).
The blockers for me: (1) time to maintain, (2) don’t want to become support hell if people file issues on importers I didn’t write.
Better error messages. Beancount gives “could not infer posting” when you’re missing a precision. Took me 2 hours to debug. A hint (“did you forget precision on AAPL?”) would save hundreds of hours community-wide.
Why it doesn’t happen: probably low priority vs core features.
