I need to vent, and I’m hoping I’m not alone in this.
Last month, I spent 12 hours learning a new AI-powered tax categorization tool. Watched the training videos, completed the certification, set up the integration, tested it on sample data. Finally got it working beautifully for one client. Two weeks later, the vendor released a “major update” that changed the interface, altered the categorization logic, and required re-certification.
I’m back to square one.
The Perpetual Training Paradox
We’re told that AI fluency is now a core competency for accountants in 2026. I don’t disagree—46% of accountants report using AI daily, and the technology genuinely delivers time savings when it works. But here’s what nobody talks about: the technology evolves faster than humans can absorb it.
Every quarter brings:
- New AI features from existing vendors
- Updated governance requirements from AICPA
- Changed best practices as the industry learns what works
- Entirely new tools that promise to “revolutionize” workflows
When does the learning stop and the productivity begin?
The Real Constraint: Human Adoption Speed
Our clients don’t care that we’re “learning AI.” They want their books closed, their taxes filed, their questions answered. But if I’m spending 10-15 hours per month just staying current with AI tools, that’s 2-3 full client days lost to perpetual training.
And here’s the kicker: I can’t bill for learning time. I can bill for applying what I’ve learned, but the learning itself? That’s an investment I absorb. With margins already compressed, how long can we sustain this?
The Data vs. The Reality
Research says accountants using GenAI report 21% higher billable hours. I’d love to know how—because my experience is the opposite. Yes, AI categorizes transactions faster than manual entry. But I still need to review every categorization, explain discrepancies to clients, and fix the 15-20% of transactions the AI gets wrong.
The time savings are real, but they’re not 21% higher billability. They’re more like “10% faster data entry, 30% more time explaining AI output to skeptical clients.”
My Current Strategy (and Its Limits)
Right now, I’m trying to balance:
- Focused skill sprints: Dedicate one week per quarter to intensive AI training
- Say no to shiny objects: Not every new AI tool deserves my attention
- Protect billable time: Learning happens outside client hours (evenings, weekends)
- Peer teaching: Partner with another CPA to split learning burden
But I’m exhausted. And I worry I’m falling behind while simultaneously overtaxing myself to keep up.
The Beancount Angle
Here’s what brought me back to this community: Beancount is stable. The double-entry syntax hasn’t changed in years. The plain text format means I’m not relearning a new GUI every quarter. The Python importers I wrote in 2024 still work in 2026.
When everything else is shifting sand, plain text accounting is bedrock.
For clients who can handle the technical setup, I’m increasingly recommending Beancount over AI-powered black boxes. Yes, it requires more upfront investment. But once it’s running, it’s done. No subscription treadmill. No mandatory updates. No re-certification requirements.

I refuse to believe we’re in a permanent state of “not ready yet.” There has to be a sustainable path forward that doesn’t require working 60-hour weeks just to stay current.
