What's Inside

Fiscal years end December 31. All figures sourced from Philip Morris International Inc. Form 10-K and Form 8-K earnings-release exhibits (SEC EDGAR, CIK 0001413329; NYSE: PM). The balance sheet carries a stockholders' deficit in every period because treasury stock at cost (about $35.5 billion) exceeds paid-in capital plus reinvested earnings; the FY2026Q3 file is modeled from the condensed statements in the earnings release, so its receivables, inventories, payables and equity components sit in aggregates that the FY2026 10-K will restore.

Quick Start

bash
uvx --from beancount bean-check main.bean
uvx --from beanquery bean-query main.bean \
"SELECT year, sum(position) WHERE account ~ '^Income:Revenue' GROUP BY year ORDER BY year"

Zero output from bean-check means the ledger is internally consistent: every
income statement sums to zero and every balance-sheet snapshot reconciles to
the filed totals. The query prints revenue by calendar year; income is a
credit, so it shows as a negative number. Open main.bean in Fava
or import it into beancount.io to explore it visually.

Methodology

  • Balance sheet — pad / balance directives assert each period-end
figure against the filing named in that period file's source banner.
  • Income statement — one zero-sum transaction per period: Income
negative (credit), Expenses positive (debit), with the arithmetic check in
    a comment directly above it.
  • Unit — MUSD; 11,438 MUSD means 11,438 million US dollars.
  • Additional accounts — Assets:Current:Inventory (leaf tobacco, raw
    materials, finished product), Assets:NonCurrent:LongTermInvestments (equity
investments), Equity:TreasuryStock (repurchased stock at cost, a debit —
the reason book equity is negative), Equity:UndisaggregatedParent (the Q3
PMI equity total) and Equity:NoncontrollingInterests, opened beyond the
standard chart (see each account's open line in main.bean).
  • Revenue is net of excise tax. PMI's filings print net revenues after the
excise tax on products (over $50 billion a year); that tax never touches the
    ledger's Income:Revenue.
  • Net income means attributable to PMI. Each income statement adds the
noncontrolling-interest share back on Expenses:OtherNet, exactly as the
filing's walk from consolidated to attributable net earnings does, so the
    offset is the headline number.
  • Named one-offs stay labeled. The FY2024 RBH equity-investment impairment
(2,316) and the FY2025 goodwill impairment (41) each get their own labeled
Expenses:OtherNet posting with the 10-K note cited.
