FY20252025-12-317,7182,462

Amounts in MUSD (millions of US dollars), exactly as the ledger records them.

What's Inside

Fiscal years end December 31. All figures sourced from Moody's Corporation Form 10-K and 10-Q filings (SEC EDGAR, CIK 0001059556). Coverage starts at FY2024: two audited annuals plus the latest quarter. The income statement keeps Moody's own captions — "Operating", "Selling, general and administrative", "Depreciation and amortization" and "Restructuring" — while the two reportable segments (Moody's Investors Service and Moody's Analytics) are analyzed in the linked earnings post rather than as sub-accounts, so revenue stays one comparable line.

Quick Start

bash
uvx --from beancount bean-check main.bean
uvx --from beanquery bean-query main.bean \
"SELECT year, sum(position) WHERE account ~ '^Income:Revenue' GROUP BY year ORDER BY year"

Zero output from bean-check means the ledger is internally consistent: every
income statement sums to zero and every balance-sheet snapshot reconciles to
the filed totals. The query prints revenue by calendar year; income is a
credit, so it shows as a negative number. Open main.bean in Fava
or import it into beancount.io to explore it visually.

Methodology

  • Balance sheet — pad / balance directives assert each period-end
figure against the filing named in that period file's source banner.
  • Income statement — one zero-sum transaction per period: Income
negative (credit), Expenses positive (debit), with the arithmetic check in
    a comment directly above it.
  • Unit — MUSD; 2,023 MUSD means 2,023 million US dollars.
  • Extra accounts — Expenses:DepreciationAndAmortization and Expenses:Restructuring hold the filing's own lines (the latter also carries "Charges related to asset abandonment" as a labeled posting); Equity:TreasuryStock holds "Treasury stock, at cost" as a debit; Equity:NoncontrollingInterests holds the minority stake; the ASC 842 right-of-use asset and lease liabilities sit on Assets:NonCurrent:OperatingLeaseRightOfUse and Liabilities:{Current,NonCurrent}:OperatingLeases.
  • Named one-offs — each period's gain on business divestitures is its own posting: the MA Learning Solutions sale (FY2025, $23M) and the MA Regulatory Solutions sale (FY2026Q3, $115M). The net-income offset is consolidated net income; the attributable-to-Moody's split is in each transaction's comment.
