What's Inside

Fiscal years end on the last day of February and are labeled by the ending
year (FY2024 ended February 29, 2024). SEC EDGAR CIK 0001070235 (NYSE: BB,
TSX: BB); the company reports in U.S. dollars under U.S. GAAP. Each year is
recorded as last presented: BlackBerry sold its Cylance endpoint security
business on February 3, 2025, and the fiscal 2025 Form 10-K recasts FY2023 and
FY2024 so that revenue and every expense line are continuing operations only.
FY2022 was never recast, so its lines still include Cylance and its revenue is
not comparable with later years. FY2027Q2 is the standalone quarter June 1 –
August 31, 2026, not the six-month statement; FY2027Q1 is not included. The
filings print whole millions of dollars through the fiscal 2024 Form 10-K and
one decimal after it, and the ledger keeps each figure at the precision of the
filing it is cited to.

Quick Start

bash
uvx --from beancount bean-check main.bean
uvx --from beanquery bean-query main.bean \
"SELECT year, sum(position) WHERE account ~ '^Income:Revenue' GROUP BY year ORDER BY year"

Zero output from bean-check means the ledger is internally consistent: every
income statement sums to zero and every balance-sheet snapshot reconciles to
the filed totals. The query prints revenue by calendar year; income is a
credit, so it shows as a negative number. Open main.bean in Fava
or import it into beancount.io to explore it visually.

Methodology

  • Balance sheet — pad / balance directives assert each period-end
figure against the filing named in that period file's source banner.
  • Income statement — one zero-sum transaction per period: Income
negative (credit), Expenses positive (debit), with the arithmetic check in
    a comment directly above it.
  • Unit — MUSD; 163.3 MUSD means 163.3 million US dollars.
  • Discontinued operations — the Cylance result is a labeled posting on
    Expenses:DiscontinuedOperations, net of tax, in FY2023, FY2024 and FY2025;
FY2025 adds a second labeled posting for the gain on the disposal. The
Equity:Adjustments offset in each income statement is the filing's
consolidated net income or loss, continuing plus discontinued, which equals
the figure originally filed for that year.
  • One-off lines — impairment of goodwill, impairment of long-lived
assets, the fair value adjustment on the convertible debentures, litigation
settlements and the gain on sale of property, plant and equipment are each
their own labeled posting with the filed value, beside investment income,
net, on Expenses:OtherNet or Income:OtherNet (whichever way their net
falls in that period, never both). The filings print these lines inside
operating expenses, so the filing's "operating income" is not a ledger
subtotal; each period file prints it in its banner.
  • Restructuring — the filings state restructuring charges are recorded
within general and administrative expenses. That amount is its own labeled
posting on Expenses:SellingGeneralAdministrative, and the rest of the
filed line is the posting beside it; the two sum to the filed line.
  • Held for sale — the February 29, 2024 balance sheet shows Cylance's
balances as four held-for-sale captions. They sit in the …:Other
residuals, itemized in that period file.
  • Additional accounts — Assets:NonCurrent:RestrictedCash,
    Assets:NonCurrent:LongTermInvestments,
    Assets:NonCurrent:OperatingLeaseRightOfUse,
    Liabilities:NonCurrent:DeferredRevenue,
    Liabilities:NonCurrent:OperatingLeases, Expenses:DiscontinuedOperations,
opened beyond the standard chart (see each account's open line in
main.bean). Equity:RetainedEarnings holds the deficit, a debit balance in
    every period.
  • Balance tolerance — main.bean tightens Beancount's inferred balance
tolerance so that a one-tenth move between two period ends is asserted
    rather than absorbed.
