What's Inside

PeriodFileSource
FY2024FY2024/FY2024.beanForm 10-K, fiscal year ended December 31, 2024
FY2025FY2025/FY2025.beanForm 10-K, fiscal year ended December 31, 2025
FY2026Q3FY2026/FY2026Q3.beanForm 10-Q, quarter ended September 30, 2026

Fiscal years end December 31. All figures sourced from American Express Company SEC filings (Form 10-K annual reports and the Q3 2026 Form 10-Q, EDGAR CIK 4962), reported in $ millions. The filing presents an unclassified balance sheet, so Current / NonCurrent here are the house hierarchy; from Q1 2026 Card Member receivables and Card Member loans are presented combined as Card balances, which is why FY2026Q3 asserts no separate receivables line. The company reports no noncontrolling interests, so net income needs no attribution split.

Quick Start

bash
uvx --from beancount bean-check main.bean
uvx --from beanquery bean-query main.bean \
"SELECT year, sum(position) WHERE account ~ '^Income:Revenue' GROUP BY year ORDER BY year"

Zero output from bean-check means the ledger is internally consistent: every
income statement sums to zero and every balance-sheet snapshot reconciles to
the filed totals. The query prints revenue by calendar year; income is a
credit, so it shows as a negative number. Open main.bean in Fava
or import it into beancount.io to explore it visually.

Methodology

  • Balance sheet — pad / balance directives assert each period-end
figure against the filing named in that period file's source banner.
  • Income statement — one zero-sum transaction per period: Income
negative (credit), Expenses positive (debit), with the arithmetic check in
    a comment directly above it.
  • Unit — MUSD; 20,062 MUSD means 20,062 million US dollars.
  • Additional accounts — Assets:Current:HeldForSale,
    Assets:NonCurrent:InvestmentSecurities, Assets:NonCurrent:Loans,
    Liabilities:Current:Deposits, Expenses:OperatingExpenses, opened beyond
the standard chart (see each account's open line in main.bean).
  • Revenue is total revenues net of interest expense — non-interest
revenues plus net interest income in a single Income:Revenue posting, with
the split in each period's comments; interest expense is already netted, so
no separate interest-expense line is posted.
  • Provisions for credit losses sit on Expenses:CostOfRevenue;
total operating expenses sit on Expenses:OperatingExpenses, with the
quantified one-offs isolated as their own postings: the FY2024 Accertify
sale gain ($531M), and in FY2026Q3 the GBTG sale gain ($982M) paired with
the $336M restructuring charge the earnings release adjusts for.
  • Residual buckets — Assets:NonCurrent:Other holds Other loans plus
Other assets, with both components named in each period's comments.
